Directions – How to use
This medicine is for rectal use only and should be inserted into the back passage as a suppository.
The recommended dose for adults and children aged 12 years and over is one 10 mg suppository once daily when required, with an effect usually occurring within 10 to 30 minutes. It should not be used every day for longer than 5 days; if you need to use laxatives daily or if abdominal pain persists, you should consult a doctor to determine the underlying cause.
To insert the suppository, remove the foil wrapping, lie on your side with your knees drawn up, and insert the pointed end first as far as possible, then gently push it slightly sideways so it touches the bowel wall. The suppository should be kept in place for at least 30 minutes, even if you feel an urgent need to open your bowels. If the suppository comes out immediately, it may not have been inserted far enough and should be reinserted as far as possible and retained for 30 minutes. Excessive use or prolonged use may lead to fluid and salt imbalances, low potassium levels (hypokalaemia) and dehydration, which may present as thirst, dizziness or faintness, headache, and reduced urine output.
Side Effects & Warnings
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) include abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhoea, and nausea. These effects are usually mild and occur as a result of increased bowel activity.
Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) include blood in the stools, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, discomfort inside or around the back passage, and dizziness.
Rare but serious side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) include a severe allergic reaction, which may cause swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or dizziness; in such cases, stop using the medicine and seek urgent medical attention. Other rare effects include colitis (inflammation of the large intestine causing abdominal pain and diarrhoea), dehydration, allergic skin reactions, and fainting.
Warnings and Precautions
Overuse of this medicine should be avoided, as it may impair normal intestinal function and lead to serious disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance, as well as severe dehydration, which in rare cases can have serious consequences. If you experience dizziness or feel faint, you should avoid driving or operating machinery until these symptoms have completely resolved.
Age Restrictions
Do not use in children under 12 years.
Other Medicines & Conditions
You should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, particularly diuretics (“water tablets”) such as bendroflumethiazide or furosemide, corticosteroids such as prednisolone, or other laxatives, as using these medicines together may increase the risk of fluid and electrolyte disturbances.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should consult a pharmacist or doctor before using this medicine.
Information & Advice
Maintaining a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables to increase fibre intake, drinking sufficient water to prevent dehydration, and keeping physically active can all help support normal bowel function. You should also allow yourself time to open your bowels when your body signals the need. Medical advice should be sought if constipation persists, if laxatives are required on a daily basis, or if abdominal pain does not resolve.
