What is Dulcolax Suppositories for Children used for?

Dulcolax Suppositories for Children is indicated for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation. It may also be used, under medical supervision, to empty the bowel prior to certain diagnostic or surgical procedures, such as colonoscopy.

How does Dulcolax Suppositories for Children work?

Dulcolax Suppositories for Children is a stimulant laxative that acts by increasing peristaltic activity of the bowel and promoting the secretion of water and electrolytes into the colon. This action softens the stool and facilitates bowel evacuation. Rectal suppositories act more rapidly, usually within 10–30 minutes.

Directions – How to use

The suppository should be inserted rectally, where it dissolves and produces a bowel movement rapidly, usually within a short period of time. It should not be used continuously for more than 5 days without medical review, as prolonged use may lead to dependence or electrolyte imbalance.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common adverse effects include abdominal cramps or colic, diarrhoea, nausea, and general stomach discomfort. These effects are usually mild and transient. However, medical attention should be sought if serious symptoms occur, such as severe diarrhoea accompanied by signs of dehydration, rectal bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, or failure to pass a bowel movement despite using the medicine.

Warnings and Precautions

This product should not be used continuously for longer than recommended, as prolonged use may lead to bowel dependence or potential impairment of normal bowel function. It is not suitable for use in children below the specified licensed age for the particular formulation without prior advice from a clinician. Furthermore, stimulant laxatives must not be used in individuals with known or suspected intestinal obstruction, severe abdominal pain, or undiagnosed abdominal symptoms without appropriate medical assessment and supervision.

Age Restrictions

This product may be used in children aged 2–10 years at the appropriate paediatric dose when clinically indicated. However, they are not recommended for children under 2 years of age

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

During pregnancy, bisacodyl is not generally recommended unless advised by a healthcare professional, and women should consult their obstetric care provider before use. During breastfeeding, bisacodyl may be used if clinically necessary; however, it is advisable to seek guidance from a clinician prior to treatment.

Information & Advice

Patients should take the lowest effective dose necessary to relieve symptoms. Adequate fluid intake should be maintained, together with a diet rich in fibre such as fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals, as many cases of constipation improve with non-pharmacological measures. If symptoms persist beyond the recommended duration of use or recur frequently, medical assessment should be sought to exclude underlying pathology.

Storage

Bisacodyl 5 mg suppositories for children should be kept out of the sight and reach of children to minimise the risk of accidental ingestion. They should be stored in their original packaging (blister carton) until required for use in order to protect them from moisture and contamination and to allow the expiry date to be checked easily. The suppositories should be kept in a cool, dry place at a temperature below 25 °C and must not be stored above 25 °C. Exposure to heat should be avoided, as this may cause the suppositories to soften or melt. They should not be used after the expiry date printed on the carton or blister, noting that the expiry date refers to the last day of the stated month. Unused or expired medicines should not be disposed of via household waste or wastewater; advice on appropriate disposal should be sought from a pharmacist. If the suppositories become too soft, they may be briefly refrigerated while still in their packaging prior to administration. Always consult the patient information leaflet supplied with the specific product, as manufacturer storage recommendations may vary slightly.
