Wegovy Pill – Expected Soon in the UK
A new way to lose weight without injections could soon be available in the UK.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy injections. It has been developed for people who would prefer a simple daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.
Already approved by the FDA, the Wegovy pill is expected to arrive in the UK following regulatory approval. While an official launch date has not yet been confirmed, it is anticipated to become available in the near future.
Inclusion Criteria
- Aged ≥18 years
- BMI ≥30 kg/m2 or ≥27 kg/m2 with ≥1 obesity-related complication (treated or untreated): hypertension, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease
- ≥1 self-reported unsuccessful dietary effort to lose weight
How Does It Work?
The Wegovy pill works by helping you feel fuller for longer, reducing hunger and helping you eat less. When combined with a healthy diet and regular physical activity, it can support significant weight loss. Because semaglutide is a delicate peptide medicine, the tablet contains a special ingredient called SNAC, which helps protect it from stomach acid and allows your body to absorb it properly.
How Is It taken?
OASIS-4 Clinical Trial
Oral semaglutide 25mg has been evaluated in the OASIS-4 clinical trial, involving adults without diabetes who had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or above, or a BMI of 27 kg/m² or above with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease.
Participants were randomly assigned to receive either oral semaglutide 25mg or a placebo tablet, alongside lifestyle interventions that included dietary improvements and increased physical activity. Treatment was started at a low dose of 3mg once daily and gradually increased every four weeks, reaching the 25mg maintenance dose after 12 weeks.
Participants remained on the maintenance dose for a further 52 weeks, allowing researchers to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of oral semaglutide as a weight management treatment. The study findings have contributed to the growing evidence supporting semaglutide as a potential treatment option for adults living with overweight or obesity.
The results
In a 64-week clinical study, adults taking oral semaglutide alongside diet and exercise lost an average of 14% of their body weight (around 33lbs/15 kg).
The study also found that:
- 76% of people lost at least 5% of their body weight
- People taking oral semaglutide lost significantly more weight than those taking placebo
- Weight loss results were comparable to those observed in clinical trials of injectable semaglutide treatments.
- The safety profile of oral semaglutide was similar to that of injectable semaglutide, including the known gastrointestinal (GI) side effects associated with semaglutide treatment.
