What is Senokot Max Strength 24 Tablets used for?
Senokot Max Strength 24 Tablets contain senna (sennosides) as the active ingredient and are indicated for the short-term relief of occasional constipation.
How does Senokot Max Strength 24 Tablets work?
Senna acts as a stimulant laxative, increasing bowel motility by stimulating the muscles of the large intestine, thereby facilitating the passage of stools. This medicine is intended solely for the management of constipation and does not aid weight loss.
Directions – How to use
The recommended dosage is one tablet taken at night with water, unless otherwise advised by a prescriber. Treatment should begin with the lowest effective dose, which may be increased only if necessary. The medicine should be used no more than 2–3 times per week and not for longer than one week without seeking medical advice. It is not suitable for use in children under 18 years of age unless under professional guidance.
If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken at the usual time; a double dose should not be taken to make up for a missed dose.
Side Effects & Warnings
Common and less-serious side effects may include abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhoea, and mild allergic reactions such as itching. Discolouration of the urine may also occur; this effect is harmless and reversible on discontinuation of the medicine.
Potential serious effects and complications may occur particularly with overuse or prolonged use. These include electrolyte imbalances, such as low potassium levels, which may present as fatigue, dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat. Marked diarrhoea may lead to dehydration and related symptoms. Long-term or excessive use of stimulant laxatives may also result in a ‘lazy bowel’, characterised by reduced bowel muscle function and dependence on laxatives.
Warnings and Precautions
This medicine should not be taken without prior clinical review if there is a known allergy to any of its ingredients, intestinal blockage or narrowing, bowel paralysis, appendicitis, or inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. It should also be avoided in cases of severe dehydration, persistent undiagnosed abdominal pain, faecal impaction, rectal bleeding, or a sudden change in bowel habit lasting longer than two weeks. Caution is required in patients with heart or kidney failure, and the medicine should not be used if another laxative has already been taken without effect. Treatment should be stopped and medical advice sought if symptoms worsen or persist, if there is no bowel movement within three days of use, or if daily laxatives are required.
Age Restrictions
This medicine is suitable for use in adults and the elderly when clinically indicated. Use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age is not recommended unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Other Medicines & Conditions
Patients should discuss all current medicines with a clinician before use, including over-the-counter, herbal, or complementary therapies. Particular caution is required when taking medicines that affect electrolyte balance, heart rhythm, or diuretics, as concomitant use may increase the risk of potassium imbalance. The prescriber should also be informed of any kidney disorders prior to treatment.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Senokot Max Strength is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless used under clinician supervision, due to potential risks and the lack of well-established safety data in these populations.
