What is Proctosedyl Ointment?

Proctosedyl Ointment is a topical treatment used for the short term relief (for no more than 7 days) of symptoms associated with haemorrhoids (piles) and pruritus ani in adults and young people aged 16 years and over.

It helps relieve pain, irritation, swelling, discharge and itching caused by enlarged or swollen blood vessels around the back passage. It is also used to treat pruritus ani – a condition characterised by intense itching or burning around the anus, which may worsen at night or after bowel movements.

Proctosedyl Ointment contains two active ingredients: cinchocaine hydrochloride and hydrocortisone.

How Proctosedyl works

Cinchocaine hydrochloride is a local anaesthetic that works by numbing the area where it is applied, helping to relieve pain, burning and discomfort, and easing spasm of the back passage.

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces the production of substances that cause inflammation. This helps decrease swelling, redness, itching and discharge.

Together, these ingredients provide effective short term relief of haemorrhoid and anal itching symptoms while allowing the area to heal.
