What is Nystatin oral suspension used for?

Nystatin oral suspension is used to treat oral thrush, a common fungal infection in the mouth caused by Candida. It can cause white patches on the tongue or inside the cheeks, redness, soreness and discomfort when feeding or eating.

It is suitable for adults, children and babies aged 4 weeks and older. It is often used in babies with thrush, denture wearers, people who use steroid inhalers, and those with a weakened immune system. The medicine works in the mouth and is not absorbed into the body in significant amounts.

How Nystatin works

Nystatin is an antifungal medicine. It works by attaching to the outer layer of the fungal cells. This damages the cell wall, causing the fungus to break down and die.

It only works against fungal infections and will not treat bacterial or viral infections.
