Dulcolax Pico Liquid is used for the relief of short-term, occasional constipation by helping to stimulate bowel activity when normal bowel movements have slowed. It is intended for temporary use only and should be used when dietary and lifestyle measures alone are insufficient. Dulcolax Pico Liquid does not cause loss of body fat and has no role in weight management; misuse for weight loss can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and dependence on laxatives, and therefore it should not be used for this purpose.

What is Dulcolax Pico Liquid used for?
How does Dulcolax Pico Liquid work?
Dulcolax Pico Liquid contains sodium picosulfate, a stimulant laxative that works by being converted in the large intestine into its active form by natural gut bacteria. The active substance stimulates the nerve endings in the bowel wall, increasing intestinal muscle contractions (peristalsis) and promoting the movement of stool through the colon. This action helps to restore normal bowel function and relieve constipation, usually producing an effect within several hours after administration

Directions – How to use
For adults and children aged 12 years and over, the recommended dose is 5–10 mL taken at night, equivalent to one to two 5mL spoonfuls.
If you have not used this medicine before, treatment should be started with 5 mL at night, and the dose may be increased to 10 mL if necessary. This medicine should not be used every day for more than 5 days; if a laxative is needed on a daily basis, a doctor should be consulted to identify the underlying cause of constipation. Prolonged or excessive use may result in fluid and electrolyte imbalance, particularly low potassium levels (hypokalaemia), and dehydration. If an overdose is suspected, urgent medical advice should be sought, and the medicine container should be taken with you.
Side Effects & Warnings
Possible side effects include diarrhoea, which is very common and occurs as a result of increased bowel activity; this may lead to fluid loss if prolonged. Common side effects include abdominal discomfort, cramping, or pain, which are usually mild to moderate and related to stimulation of the bowel muscles. Uncommon side effects include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, which may occur particularly if the medicine causes significant fluid loss or if the individual is sensitive to stimulant laxatives.
Serious side effects may occur and require immediate medical attention. These include fainting and allergic reactions, which may present as a rash or itching, or swelling of the skin, mouth, or face, potentially leading to difficulty swallowing or breathing. If any of these symptoms occur, the medicine should be stopped and urgent medical advice sought.
Warnings and Precautions
Dulcolax Pico Liquid must not be used for weight loss, as misuse or overuse can lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte or mineral disturbances, which may adversely affect nerve and muscle function, including that of the bowel and heart. Repeated or excessive use should be avoided, as it may impair normal intestinal function. This medicine should not be taken if individuals have a known allergy to sodium picosulfate or any of the ingredients, severe dehydration, ileus or intestinal obstruction, or serious abdominal conditions such as appendicitis. It must also not be used in cases of severe abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and/or fever, or in patients with inflammatory diseases of the small or large intestine.
Age Restrictions
Do not use in children under 12 years.
Other Medicines & Conditions
You should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines, particularly diuretics (such as bendroflumethiazide or furosemide), corticosteroids (such as prednisolone), or antibiotics, as these medicines may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance or reduce the effectiveness of the laxative.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
Information & Advice
Before using stimulant laxatives, dietary and lifestyle measures should be optimised. These include eating a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, drinking sufficient fluids to prevent dehydration, maintaining regular physical activity, and allowing adequate time for bowel movements when the urge occurs, rather than delaying defecation.
Ingredients
Each 5mL of the oral solution contains 5mg of sodium picosulfate as the active ingredient.
Other Ingredients
The other ingredients include carmellose sodium, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), glycerol, tutti frutti flavour, saccharin sodium, ethanol, sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment), and water.
