What is Senokot Tablets – 100 Tablets used for?

Senokot Tablets – 100 Tablets is indicated for the relief of occasional constipation in adults, elderly patients, and children aged 12 years and over. It is intended for short-term use where bowel movements are infrequent or difficult to pass and where lifestyle measures, such as increased dietary fibre, fluid intake, and physical activity, have not been sufficient. The product helps to restore normal bowel function by promoting effective bowel movements, thereby reducing discomfort, abdominal bloating, and straining associated with constipation.

How does Senokot Tablets – 100 Tablets used work?

Senna acts as a stimulant laxative by bacterial conversion in the colon to an active metabolite that stimulates enteric nerves, enhances peristalsis, and increases colonic fluid secretion, resulting in accelerated intestinal transit and effective bowel evacuation.

Directions – How to use

Take one to two tablets at night, using the lowest effective dose initially. The medicine is normally used up to two to three times per week and should not be taken for longer than one week without seeking medical advice. If too many tablets are taken, there is a risk of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (such as low potassium levels), development of a ‘lazy bowel’, and irregular heart rhythm. If a dose is missed, the next dose should be taken at the usual time; a double dose should not be taken to make up for the missed dose.

Side Effects & Warnings

Common side effects include abdominal cramps, spasms and diarrhoea, which may occur more frequently in individuals with irritable bowel. Discolouration of the urine to a yellow or red-brown colour may also occur; this is harmless and not clinically significant.

Serious or less common adverse effects may include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives and difficulty breathing. Prolonged or chronic use may lead to albuminuria or haematuria (the presence of protein or red blood cells in the urine) and pigmentation of the gastrointestinal tract. Long-term use may also result in low serum potassium levels, which can cause muscle weakness and cramps, as well as severe weight loss and musculoskeletal changes.

Warnings and Precautions

This medicine should not be taken if there is a known allergy to any of the ingredients, or in cases of bowel blockage or obstruction, paralytic ileus, or bowel atony. It is also contraindicated in patients with appendicitis or inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Using this medicine is not recommended in individuals with severe dehydration, persistent abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, faecal impaction, or rectal bleeding of unknown cause, or if a laxative has already been taken without effect. This medicine should not be used in patients with kidney or heart failure.

Age Restrictions

Not for use in children under 12 years.

Other Medicines & Conditions

Patients should inform their clinician or pharmacist if they are taking cardiac glycosides, antiarrhythmics, diuretics, corticosteroids, or liquorice preparations, as concomitant use may affect electrolyte balance and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
