What are Proctosedyl Suppositories?

Proctosedyl Suppositories are a rectal treatment used for the short term relief (for no more than 7 days) of symptoms associated with internal haemorrhoids (piles) and pruritus ani in adults and young people aged 16 years and over.

They help relieve pain, irritation, swelling, discharge and itching caused by inflamed or swollen blood vessels inside the back passage. They may also be used for pruritus ani – a condition characterised by intense itching or burning around the anus, which can worsen at night or after bowel movements.

Proctosedyl Suppositories contain two active ingredients: cinchocaine hydrochloride and hydrocortisone.

How Proctosedyl Suppositories work

Cinchocaine hydrochloride is a local anaesthetic that works by numbing the area where it is applied, helping to relieve pain, burning and discomfort inside the back passage.

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces the production of substances that cause inflammation. This helps decrease swelling, redness, itching and discharge.

Together, these ingredients provide effective short term relief of internal haemorrhoid and anal itching symptoms while allowing the affected area to heal.
